Kenya travel guide
Why Kenya is worth the trip
Kenya is one of the best places in the world for a wildlife safari. In the Maasai Mara you can see lions, elephants, giraffes, cheetahs and huge herds of wildebeest and zebra, and from July to October the great migration arrives from Tanzania. Lake Nakuru adds rhinos and flamingos, and the Great Rift Valley gives sweeping views on the way.
Six days covers the Maasai Mara well. With eight days you can add Lake Nakuru and travel at a slower pace. Days on safari start early, with game drives at sunrise and late afternoon, when the animals are most active.
Which Kenya safari is right for you?
- Classic safari: Maasai Mara & Rift Valley, 6 days
- Longer safari: Maasai Mara & Lake Nakuru, 8 days
Before you fly
Nepali passport holders need a Kenya eTA (electronic travel authorisation) approved before departure; our packages include it. Your passport needs six months' validity and two blank pages. A yellow fever certificate is often asked for, and antimalarial tablets are advised for safari areas, so visit a travel clinic about six weeks before you go.
Safari tips
Pack light clothes in neutral colours, a warm layer for cold mornings, a hat, sunscreen and binoculars. Soft bags fit better in safari vehicles. Stay inside the vehicle in the parks and follow your guide's instructions near animals.
Best time to visit Kenya
June to October is the best time for a Kenya safari: it is dry, the grass is short and the great migration is in the Maasai Mara from about July to October. January and February are also dry and good. The long rains (March to May) turn the land green but can make tracks muddy; the short rains (November and December) bring fewer crowds.
| Month | Weather | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| January | Dry and warm | Game viewing, fewer crowds |
| February | Dry and warm | Calving season, good wildlife |
| March | Long rains begin | Green landscapes, low prices |
| April | Wettest month | Low season |
| May | Rainy | Low season |
| June | Dry, cooler | Safari season starts |
| July | Dry, cool mornings | Great migration arrives |
| August | Dry | Migration river crossings |
| September | Dry | Migration, big cats |
| October | Dry, warming | Dashain holidays, end of migration |
| November | Short rains | Tihar holidays, green and quiet |
| December | Short rains ease | Festive safaris |
