Maldives travel guide
Why Maldives is worth the trip
The Maldives is a country of about 1,200 coral islands in the Indian Ocean, famous for clear lagoons, white sand and overwater villas. Most resorts sit on their own private island, so you stay in one place and slow down: snorkelling, swimming, spa days and sunsets. It is one of the most popular honeymoon choices from Nepal.
Three or four nights is the usual stay. A private resort includes meals and comfort; a local island like Maafushi costs much less. Many travellers add a few days in Sri Lanka, about an hour's flight away.
Which Maldives package is right for you?
- Honeymoon: Maldives Honeymoon, beach and overwater villa, 4 days
- Luxury: Premium Pool Villa Escape, 4 days
- Budget: Maldives Holiday on Maafushi, 4 days
- Best of both: Maafushi & Private Resort Island, 5 days
- Add Sri Lanka: Maldives & Sri Lanka, 7 days, or the 9-day luxury version
Resort island or local island?
A resort is a private island with villas, all-inclusive meals and a bar, reached by speedboat or seaplane. A local island such as Maafushi has small hotels and real Maldivian life and costs far less, but alcohol is not sold and swimwear is worn only on the tourist beach.
Before you fly
Every visitor gets a free 30-day visa on arrival. You need a passport valid for six months, a return ticket, your hotel booking and the free online IMUGA traveller declaration, filled in within 96 hours of your flight. Seaplanes only fly in daylight, so a late arrival may need one night near the airport.
